August is considered to be the last month of summer. Don’t let that piece of depressing information bring you down – there’s a load of tasty food holidays taking place! As usual, there’s something sweet and something salty, something grilled and something boozy :).
Before we look further into the specific food holidays of August, let’s look at the whole month for a moment. August seems to be:
– National Catfish Month
– National Panini Month
– National Peach Month
– National Sandwich Month
A delicious catfish panini sandwich with peach sauce, anyone?
But there are plenty of us, who would like to diversify our dinners and food holidays in August. That’s why Sloth is pulling together this introduction and starts to look at the actual list of food-related holidays of August.

August 2 – National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
What better way to kick off our list for National Sandwich Month than an ice cream sandwich! There’s plenty of ice cream sandwiches in your local supermarket, but Sloth strongly advises you to make your own dessert. Believe us, chocolate chip cookies make a fantastic foundation for a home-made ice cream sandwich.
August 3 – National Watermelon Day / National IPA Day
There are two kinds of people – women and men. A huge surprise, we know. Actually, petting out this mundane fact makes sense today, since ladies usually can’t spend a hot summer day without a slice of cold watermelon and gentlemen typically prefer an ice cold IPA. Today is the day everyone is satisfied.
August 4 – National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
Our favorite cookies have chocolate chips in them. We have a feeling that we’re not alone with this opinion. And don’t even try to prank anyone today with raisin cookies – that means terrible cookie luck until the end of your life!
August 5 – National Oyster Day
Yeah, we know – the world is our oyster and all that stuff. Forget that worn-out slogan for today and let the real oysters be your oyster today. You can take the classic way with a slice of lemon, and that’s perfectly OK. If you’re in search of something special, let us recommend you a tempura oyster with some spicy plum sauce on the side.
August 8 – National Frozen Custard Day / National Zucchini Day / International Beer Day
Usually, when there are several holidays packed on one date, they’re entirely different. Well, 8th August proves it pretty conveniently since Vibrant Sloth couldn’t find anything to relate frozen custard, zucchini and a glass of cold beer to each other.
August 11 – National Panini Day / National Raspberry Tart Day
Paninis are fantastic and therefore one of our favorite elements of Italian cuisine. It’s a shame that pizzas and every kind of pasta grab most of the spotlights from delicious grilled sandwiches we know as paninis. Well, not today – on 11th of August paninis rule our menu! Looking for a dessert to enjoy after a pile of paninis? Today it HAS to be a beautiful raspberry tart.
August 13 – National Filet Mignon Day
Steak lovers can assure you that filet mignon is a holy grail of beef cuts. It makes perfect sense since it happens to be the most tender and juicy piece of beef out there. There are also apparent downsides when celebrating national filet mignon day – the expenses. Since one steer can only give a butcher up to 500 grams of filet mignon, be ready to pay remarkably more than you would for a regular steak. But let us assure you, after that joyride for your taste buds you won’t regretting paying a little extra.
August 16 – National Rum Day / National Bratwurst Day
In the middle of the August, we can observe the rare meeting of Jamaica and Germany which doesn’t take place on a soccer field. Pour out some good rum (ice and Coke are entirely optional) and grill up some bratwursts. That sounds like a meal Ron Swanson would almost enjoy. If you like what’s on the menu today, don’t forget to let the whole world to know about it by yelling “Arrr, mateys! Das ist Wunderbar!”
August 18 – National Ice Cream Pie Day
Apple pie, blueberry pie, pepperoni-pizza pie, Scotch pie, shepherd’s pie – not today! This day in the middle of the August is dedicated to ice cream pies. Make it yourself, buy one from the supermarket or steal it from your neighbor (the last one isn’t that recommended) – as long as it is a pie with ice cream.
20 – National Bacon Lovers’ Day / National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day
Bacon-Pecan, Pot8to-Pot@to. While our headliners of this day seem way too different to be enjoyed together, they make a perfect main course and dessert. Sloth will probably go for grilled BBQ bacon. For a sweet ending notes of the dinner, there should be a slice of pecan pie with some whipped cream or ice cream on top. Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?!
August 23 – National Cuban Sandwich Day / National Sponge Cake Day
While it’s not clear whether Cuban sandwiches were born in Cuba or Florida, it is 100% certain you should eat one today. If there are no Cuban restaurants or food trucks near you, it’s not that hard to make one yourself. After you have absorbed in (like a sponge) all the tastes of a Carribean sandwich symphony, treat yourself with a slice of fluffy sponge cake!
August 27 – National Pots de Crème Day
Pot de crème is precisely how it sounds – a nice porcelain cup filled with creamy custard. If you’re willing to take an extra step to burn some sugar on top of your pot and Voila! Now you have a crème brûlée.
August 29 – National Chop Suey Day
Grab a brush and put a little (makeup)”
Sorry, we wrote down Chop Suey and immediately got carried away by System Of A Down. Excuse us for that numetalesque throwback and let us remind that there’s also an incredible American-Chinese dish with the same name. Heat up your wok pan, ready some beef, pork, chicken, or shrimps, crack a few eggs and finally assemble everything with rice or noodles. NomNomNom…
August 30 – National Toasted Marshmallow Day
If cartoons have taught us anything, it’s the fact that no camping trip or a bonfire in the backyard can’t take place without a fluffy marshmallow on a stick. The team of Vibrant Sloth is divided entirely on this one – half of us love it, other 50% has tried toasted marshmallows once and promised never to do it again. Don’t be influenced by our split judgment and grill them marshmallows today like there’s no tomorrow.
August 31 – National Trail Mix Day
We’re raisin the stakes at the end of the month. You might call us nuts, but we’re all the trail mix – quite close to half a fruitcake! Pro tip for today: you don’t have to be a professional hiker to munch on some trail mix in front of the TV ;).
Sloth hopes that you’ll have a tasty August so you can step into the autumn with a belly full of delicious treats. Be sure to just leave some room for September which will also bring more than surely some good stuff on the table.
