Here we all are, happy bunch of winter survivors! So, what would be the best way to greet springtime? As usual, the answer is eating and celebrating the National Days for some of our favorite snacks and dinners.
Finish your aperitifs, tuck your napkins between your collars like they do in those old school movies and dig into our buffet dedicated to the fun fod holidays in April.
There are affiliate links in this post, but directing you to only cool food-related stuff :).
April 2 – National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day
This day is dedicated to the holy trinity of peanut butter, jelly, and bread. When should you eat it? Doesn’t matter! Sloth is planning to have this all-star comfort food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner today. Oh, did you know that if you happen to drop your PBJ sandwich, there’s 75% chance your snack will hit the ground facing down? So have some paper towels ready to clean up after that :).
April 4 – National Carrot Day
If you happen to see Bugs Bunny today and he goes all “What’s up doc?” again, you’ll finally have an adequate answer. That, of course, involves you grabbing a carrot from your pocket, you taking a bite, and you replying “Not much, Bugs. Just celebrating good ol’ carrot day.”
Did you know that every carrot you eat doubles the quality of your eyesight (results may vary)? But for real, carrots are super healthy so you should munch on them every day.
April 6 – International Carbonara Day
And now a classic switch from salad to a main course – from carrots to carbonara! Today is the day you should fix yourself a big pile of pasta so you can top it with with the king of sauces – almighty carbonara! How to cook this awesomesauce of eggs, pork, cheese, and spices ? Find out at Seriouseats.com.
April 7 – National Beer Day
Lager. Pilsner. Märzen. Dunkel. Wheat beer. Stout. IPA. Porter. Bock. Saison. Kriek. Lambic. Dubbel. Tripel. Quadrupel. Trappist beer. Barley wine. Coffee beer. Chocolate beer. Smoke beer. Pick your poison made of hops and malts and celebrate the day like a true beer connaisseur you are! Oh, and as usual – the best way to drink is to do it moderately.
April 11 – Cheese Fondue Day
Everyone knows that the best kind of cheese is molten cheese. Therefore there shouldn’t be a better way to enjoy cheese than in the form of a fondue. So without too much talking, heat up your community pot, grab some long forks for your crew and start dipping bread into that golden pot of incredible hot cheese.
While gathering data about cheese fondue, Sloth found a solid tradition to go with the fondue. The thing is pretty easy if someone loses their bread in the pot, he/she buys a round of drinks for everyone around the pot o’ cheese. “Sounds good,” says Sloth (and bends its fork in the shape of a fishing hook).
April 16 – National Eggs Benedict Day
May today be the day when your bacon is Canadian, muffins English, sauce Hollandaise and eggs poached!
Let’s be honest here, poaching eggs can be quite difficult sometimes. The very same goes for the Hollandaise sauce as well. That’s the reason all of you should fix eggs benedict once a week all year around. Yo know, just to be in shape for April 16nth :).
April 18 – National Animal Cracker Day
Imagine you have two bowls filled with crackers. The first bowl has all those regular squares n’ circles type of crackers. The other bowl happens to be filled with crackers shaped like elephants, lions, koalas, bears and maybe even sloths. What we want to know is why anyone wouldn’t pick the animal crackers? Let’s go even further – why is there even such thing as regular crackers?
April 22 – National Jellybean Day
Now, beans and jelly sound atrocious together. That can’t be said about jelly beans, our food of the day! So buy yourself a colorful bag of jelly beans and eat ‘em like no one’s watching!
Did you know that jelly beans are pretty much ancient, dating back to 1800s and being served for the troops fighting in the American Civil War? We like to think that only the winning side was jellybeaned up and that was the main reason confederates lost the war.
The other weird fact is that Jelly Bean was a slang term used for a man who looked classy as hell but didn’t have something else to back up his good looks. So, basically a hipster of those old times.
April 24 – National Pigs-in-a-Blanket Day
Puff pastry, sausages, and a working oven are all you need to celebrate the day dedicated to pigs-in-a-blanket! Want to make your edible pig herd of pastries even more interesting? Easy as A, B, and C! Add some hot sauce, cheese, vegetables, bacon or maybe even something sweet to fix yourself a blanket piggy the world has never seen before!
April 27 – National Prime Rib Day
If there are any ribs, Sloth calls dibs! Really, we friggin’ love ribs, especially under a heavy layer of that delicious barbecue sauce. Serve the ribs with some roasted or mashed potatoes and fresh coleslaw salad. Usually, prime ribs are paired with a cold beer. Sloth likes to take a route a la Ron Swanson and wash down the ribs with a glass of whiskey.
April 30 – National Raisin Day
Often regarded as a poor man’s chocolate chip (thanks a lot to all you, cookieholics!) the raisins are actually pretty much a superfood full of vitamins, minerals and fructose. Is it any wonder, considering they’ve evolved from juicy grapes? So, what can one do with raisins? Sloth will eat them like candies but if you want to cook or bake something, allow us to introduce you one of our favorite desserts – Nutella sliders with raisin buns!
Sloth wishes you all an April filled with appetite. Once again – be sure to leave some space for the sunny May as well ;).
