Summer is nearly here and we’re probably all too skinny from the harsh winter. So what better way to gain some pounds for that perfect beach body than to celebrate some of the food holidays in May. If you want to go for a theme month, then May is the national month of beef, barbeque, egg, hamburger, salad, salsa, and strawberries. But if you want to try different stuff, you’re in the right place – Sloth’s picks of weird and fun food holidays of May right ahead!
There are affiliate links in this post, but directing you to only cool food-related stuff :).
May 2 – National Chocolate Truffle Day
Today all the sweet tooths should point their attention to truffles. Truffles are believed to be born in France back in 1895. We’re glad that truffles are still a thing so we can enjoy a meal of coconut, nougat, toffee, fudge, and mint flavored truffles.
May 5 – Cinco de Mayo
While not the official day dedicated to mayonnaise, we find it would be interesting enough to unite Mexican food and mayonnaise. So throw a spoonful of may in your guac today and spread some on your enchiladas, who happen to have a national day for real.
May 10 – National Shrimp Day
Today we celebrate shrimps! Sloth will heat up a grill and go for a whole platter of golden crispy shrimps drizzled with lime juice. That’s what heaven tastes like. If you don’t feel like grilling your shrimps, go for a bowl of creamy gumbo soup. Either way, today shouldn’t go by without you tasting something shrimpy.
May 11 – National “Eat What You Want” Day
We feel that comments aren’t too necessary here. Bon appetit and dig in!
May 13 – National Apple Pie Day
Apple pie, a cornerstone of American desserts. Apple, cinnamon and some pie dough is all you need to bake yourself a perfect celebration of may the 13th. Feel free to top your pie with a ball of vanilla ice cream.
May 15 – National Chocolate Chip Day
Chips Ahoy! No one is looking you weird if you grab a spoon and start digging into a bowl of chocolate chips today. If you wish to make it a little more civilized, feel free to try out chocolate chips in cookies, muffins or pancakes.
May 18 – National Cheese Soufflé Day
Soufflé is super easy to make! If you happen to be a seasoned veteran of the battlefield they call a kitchen. Sloth has tried to make it and failed miserably. That’s why we’ve already booked a table to a restaurant with this French delight on the menu. If you decide to try making the soufflé on your own, good luck! We really mean it.
May 21 – National Strawberries and Cream Day
Fresh strawberries and whipped cream is the stuff the dreams are made of. Arrange yourself a sunbath on the patio or in the backyard and treat yourself with a refreshing bowl of strawberries and fluffy cream. Don’t forget to share your dessert on Instagram, since there aren’t much sexier foods than the one you’re eating today.
May 25 – National Wine Day
It’s National Wine Day. Some Shiraz sounds nice to celebrate with. Or how about a bottle of Chilean Cabernet? Hmm, chilled Riesling maybe. No, a Sangria is what one may need! Or is it? Come to think of it, a Pinot Noir wouldn’t be a bad choice either…
As you can see, we need your help. Shout out your favorite kind of wine in the comments :).
May 28 – National Hamburger Day
Everybody loves burgers, so there shouldnät be a reason you’re not in a festive mood today. If there are any vegans reading, don’t feel left behind. Fix yourself a chick pea burger and join the party. For that final touch, pair your juicy burger with a cold beer. OK, Sloth is hungry now and will fix us some burgers.
That’s it with our picks this month. Turn at least one those dates into a great feast or a romantic date night with your loved one. Either way, have a sunny May and enjoy your food holidays!
