Sloth friggin’ loves March! In Northern Europe, it means that winter is making room for spring and finally we get rid of all that snow and sub-zero temperatures. Other than that there’s not much going on in March. That’s the reason we had a little research on the internet for some wacky food holidays – just to keep our jaws and taste buds going while we’re waiting for those warmer days.
Care to join us in those fun food holidays of March? You’re more than welcome to celebrate!
March 1 – Peanut Butter Lovers’ Day
It’s peanut butter jelly time!
Peanut butter jelly time!
Peanut butter jelly time!
Sorry, we got a bit carried away the moment we wrote down “Peanut Butter.” Since you probably don’t want to eat just peanut butter here are some suggestions (without the jelly from our intro): cookies, cakes, bread, candy bars and much much more. If you’re not too much into cooking, then even a spoonful of plain peanut butter will do great as a kickstarter for March.
March 6 – National Oreo Day
Born in 1912 and still going strong. How strong? Well, if a cookie can call itself “The world’s favorite cookie” then there has to be some truth to it. So, what to do today? Eat as much Oreos as humanly possible, would be Sloth’s recommendation. Oh, this day also happens to have a perfect prank coded into it. All you have to do is scrape off the cream from the Oreos and replace it with toothpaste. Once it’s done, leave this minty surprise to wait for its victim.
March 7 – National Cereal Day
Screw those, who say that cereal is exclusively reserved for breakfast. True cereal fans go for the Kellogg’s flakes or muesli even for dinner and for that food break in the middle of the night where you’re not totally in control. You know those, don’t you night-time food zombies! Back to cereaous business, how does one celebrate this day? For instance, you could try out different stuff on your cereal. For instance, Cheerios and bacon could be one helluva combo. Rice Krispies and crumbled cookies sound a little better than Cheeriobacon, come to think of it.
March 9 – National Meatball Day
Grind the meat, add some spices and turn that meaty mush into delicious meatballs! That’s it; you’re ready to celebrate the ninth day of the third month also known as National Meatball Day. If you happen to walk on a vegan path or just find meatballs not to be your cup of tomato sauce, feel free to watch a documentary about climate changes and how it heavily relates to meatballs – Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
March 14 – National Steak Day
Whoa, it’s already a month since Valentine’s. So if your boyfriend treated you nice a month ago, it’s time to return the favor with a juicy steak. Is it possible Sloth forgets some aspects and fundamental parts of this holiday? Boy, does it blow when you can’t do your job with failing memory! Trying to remember something sucks, so let’s say there were no strings attached to the national steak day.
Enjoying meat-free life? Worry not, because it also happens to be Pi day today. Pie, 3.14, you get it? Yeah, everybody with grade school education gets it :).
March 22 – National Corndog Day
It’s that time of the year you should be walking your dog on a corn field. “Y tho” you might ask. That’s a good question because it’s actually hardly related to corndogs. Anyway, back to the superstar of the day – buy it from a street vendor, in a frozen form from the supermarket or make your own! The main thing is that you embrace all the awesomeness this sausage, corn batter and mustard-ketchup on a stick can offer.
March 24 – National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day
Today is the day for praisin’ them raisins. But wait, Sloth isn’t talking just about dried up grapes, there’s a chocolatey twist (cover to be more precise) to it. If you think that even chocolate isn’t enough, feel free to put the raisins into yeast dough and make some nice buns.
March 25 – Waffle Day
While not the most celebrated food holiday in the world, this one’s definitely huge in Sweden. Sloth has no guidelines set on how Våffeldagen should be celebrated, but we’re going to involve some Nutella, whipped cream, strawberries and powdered sugar.
Pro tip for hardcore waffle fans – today try to eat so many waffles hat the next time you want to see waffles again is 24 August, when America celebrates its national waffle day.
March 26 – National Spinach Day
According to old school cartoons, spinach is a guaranteed superfood which will grow your muscles in mere moments and increase all your stat points from intelligence to charisma. Today Popeye is being forgotten which can’t be said about spinach. Our favorite iron providing plant is going strong in salads, pasta, and even desserts. So what’s for dinner today? If Sloth has any saying here, it would be something spinachy.
March 27 – International Whiskey Day
Today let’s raise a glass of whiskey in honor of whiskey! Since this golden booze has been around for ages it’s quite surprising that world didn’t have a coordinated day dedicated to whiskey up until 2008. What’s equally surprising, is that this day is not 100% about glorious whiskeys. The day also publicly supports researching Parkinsons Disease. So, let’s get woozy and raise our middle fingers towards that unpleasant (to put it mildly) disease!
Enjoy the spring, enjoy the food and definitely enjoy those wacky-ass fun food holidays March serves us!
